Episode 114: Jasmine Cannady & JJ Bright

On a seemingly mundane Monday afternoon in February of 2021, a 911 call summoned police to an unassuming two-story brick home in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. On the front porch, officers found 48-year-old Krisinda Bright waiting for them, covered in what she freely admitted was the blood of two of her children: 16-year-old JJ Bright and 22-year-old Jasmine Cannady, both of whom were inside the home, dead from apparent gunshot wounds to the head.

JJ, a transgender boy who socially transitioned at age 12, and Jasmine, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, have been consistently misgendered by most media outlets from the start, and JJ has been deadnamed in news articles more times than I can count. In life, they deserved the respect of being referred to by their preferred pronouns and JJ by his chosen name; in death, the very least we can do is remember them with dignity and respect, the way they both deserve.

This is the tragic story of Jasmine Cannady and JJ Bright.

Episode 113: Kyon Jones

On May 7, 2021, a helpless seven-week-old infant was reported missing from his mother’s apartment in Washington, DC, but police were alarmed when they learned that baby Kyon Jones had been gone for two days by the time his disappearance was reported. After his mother gave several conflicting statements, both to police and to the public through a Facebook live interview with a local activist, it became clear that Kyon would not be located alive.

This is the story of a baby boy who never stood a chance. It’s also the story of a woman whose problems with drugs, alcohol, domestic violence, and mental illness made her the very last person who should be a parent, but who gave birth to several children, the last of whom was baby Kyon.

This is the frustrating story of Kyon Jones.

Note: I recently told Kyon’s story in Patreon-exclusive bonus minisode #7, but in light of recent events surrounding Kyon’s case, I decided to adapt that minisode into a regular podcast episode.

Episode 112: Moko Rangitoheriri (Part 2)

In my last episode, I told you the story of three-year-old Moko Rangitoheriri, who was brutally abused for weeks by his caretakers, Tania Shailer and David Haerewa, who were ultimately found guilty in Moko’s death and sentenced to 17 years each in New Zealand prison.

This week, you’ll hear about the killers’ attempt to appeal their sentences; the coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding Moko’s death; and the legacy of change and hope inspired by the little boy with the big, bright smile.

This is part two of the disturbing story of Moko Rangitoheriri.

Episode 111: Moko Rangitoheriri (Part 1)

In 2015, single mom of three Nicola Dally-Paki’s oldest child needed to be hospitalized with a severe infection. She couldn’t leave him alone in the hospital, but she had no family nearby to care for her two younger children, aged seven and three. With few options, Nicola asked her longtime friend, Tania Shailer, to care for the kids for a while. She had no idea she was leaving her children in the care of a monster and her equally monstrous partner, David Haerewa.

This is the story of a loving boy with a wide, infectious smile who spent the last weeks of his short life enduring unthinkable torture, pain, and violence. It’s also the story of two child killers whose inadequate charges led to ridiculously light sentences for a crime widely considered one of the worst child killings in New Zealand’s history.

This is part one of the disturbing story of Moko Rangitoheriri.

Episode 110: Ger’Mya Alexander

On the morning of Wednesday, March 18, 2020, police in Bakersfield, California responded to an apartment on a report of an eight-year-old child not breathing. Although Ger’Mya Alexander was rushed to the hospital, she died of her injuries the same day. Her mother’s boyfriend, 37-year-old Clint Mason, who had been caring for Ger’Mya when she was fatally injured, fled on foot and was apprehended the next morning.

This is the story of a smart, sweet, caring little girl who adored her granny and sometimes got in trouble at school for talking too much. It’s also the story of her unnecessary, brutal death at the hands of a man she should have been able to trust to protect her.

This is the heartbreaking story of Ger’Mya Alexander.

Episode 109: Tesslynn O’Cull (Part 2)

Last week, I told you the first part of the story of three-year-old Tesslynn O’Cull, whose murder in 1997 became known as the worst case of child abuse in Oregon’s history. After Tesslynn’s battered body was found in a shallow grave, her mother, 21-year-old Stella Kiser, and the woman’s live-in boyfriend, 20-year-old Jesse Compton, were charged with murder.

This week, I’ll tell you the rest of Tesslynn’s story, discussing Stella’s two jury trials, Jesse’s attempts to have his conviction and death sentence overturned, and more about who Tesslynn was. You’ll also hear my conversation with Tesslynn’s maternal uncle, her mother’s twin brother, Billy Kiser, who was the only person who intervened to try to save his niece and who still thinks about her every day.

This is part two of the horrific story of Tesslynn O’Cull.
