Episode 107: Girl Hidden

Jesse René Gibbs spent most of her childhood in small town North Carolina under the thumb of a narcissistic mother who twisted religion to fit her interpretation and gave birth to child after child while utterly failing to care for them. Jesse’s stepfather did nothing to protect his children from his wife’s abuse, often dealing out physical punishments when his wife was unable to do it herself, and during Jesse’s younger years, he also abused his oldest step-daughter in his own horrific way under the guise of love.

This is the story of a young girl forced to carry out her mother’s every whim while expected to raise her own siblings, make money for the family to live on, and keep the family home and farm running smoothly. It’s also the story of a survivor who, against all odds, escaped her childhood torment, made something of herself, and wrote a detailed, deeply moving memoir about her experiences using not only her own memories, but journals, official documents, and letters from her mother herself to flesh out her gut-wrenching life story.

This is the story of Jesse René Gibbs, Girl Hidden.

Episode 97: Teghan Skiba (Part 2)

Last week, I told you the first part of the story of Teghan Skiba, who was left to live in a shed in Smithfield, North Carolina for a week in July of 2010. During that week, her mother’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Jonathan Richardson, subjected the four-year-old to every imaginable form of physical, psychological, and sexual torture. When she became unresponsive on July 16, 2010 after a blow to the head, Jonathan took her to the emergency room with injuries so severe and horrifying that one nurse physically attacked him.

This is the story of a four-year-old girl who loved the color purple, spending time with her grandparents, and fingerpainting. It’s also the story of her torture at the hands of a sadistic young man who spent ten days breaking Teghan’s mind, body, and spirit, only stopping when Teghan’s body gave out after suffering countless bruises, welts, broken bones, lacerations, and human bite marks.

This is part two of the horrific story of Teghan Skiba.

Episode 96: Teghan Skiba (Part 1)

In July of 2010, Helen Reyes left for Army reserves training, leaving her boyfriend of six months, 21-year-old Jonathan Richardson, to care for her four-year-old daughter, Teghan Skiba. Over the next ten horrendous days, Jonathan kept Teghan confined in a shed on his grandparents’ property in Smithfield, North Carolina and subjected the four-year-old to every imaginable form of physical, psychological, and sexual torture. When she became unresponsive on July 16, 2010 after a blow to the head, Jonathan took her to the emergency room with injuries so severe and horrifying that one nurse physically attacked him.

This is the story of a four-year-old girl who loved her family, Disney princesses, and playing outside on sunny days. It’s also the story of a demented young man who, for whatever unfathomable reason, spent ten days in a shed torturing a little girl whose body only gave out after suffering countless bruises, welts, broken bones, lacerations, and human bite marks.

This is part one of the horrific story of Teghan Skiba.
